Field Trip to Harvest Amaranth

On October 5th our class went to the Bishop Cultural Center to learn about amaranth.
Students were separated into 3 groups. Groups rotated through stations where they got to do different activities with the amaranth. The first station is where students harvested amaranth. The tops of amaranth were picked and students also removed the leaves from the plant. Hands were used in a rubbing motion to separate as many seeds as possible, but some flowers were left with the seeds. The second station was to separate amaranth seeds from the flowers. Sifters were used over a bucket to separate the seeds from the flowers. Students also lightly blew on the seeds in their hands because the flowers are lighter than the seeds and the flowers would just fly away.  The third station is where students get to eat the amaranth seeds. We popped the amaranth and then enjoyed it with yogurt, banana, and honey. It was delicious!
